There’s something ominous about the look of that phrase followed by an ellipses, “about sunny…” In my imagination it’s a precursor to some kind of insight to Sunny and it could emphasize a positive attribute, history, or element of their being. Or it could be quite the opposite. In this case, I’ll try to keep it fairly neutral and fact based.
Sunny is a nick name. It was given to me in high school (secondary education) by some fellow students in music class. I had a habit of being quite an optimist and expressing it regularly. I suppose I didn’t know better not to. But in a time when you and those around you are going through puberty in a socially stressful and mandatory setting it probably came off a bit daft at times. But the nick name was appropriate, and it certainly could have been worse.
Professionally I am a game developer and have been working in and around games and entertainment for over 20 years as of 2023. I love it. I also consider myself extremely lucky to have been doing it for as long as I have. It’s not a flawless profession, it can be stressful and is often challenging, but I truly love it. I am energized by the passion people have for playing games and I relish the collaborative nature of creating games. From my perspective there is nothing I’d rather be doing every day.
I’ve had a lot of amazing opportunities in my career. Primarily I have worked in audio, but have also have significant stints in narrative, production, and design. I’ve also dedicated time to learning about the craft: it’s history, breakthroughs, and techniques within its vast sea of disciplines. I’ve discovered a number of personal breakthroughs in my understanding of ludology as well as storytelling and interactive story crafting which I believe is the heart of the most impactful games and in turn their impact on people.
I also enjoy sharing my personal insights, theories, and practices which is what I hope to do with sunnyheadcase.com. While there will be several posts that have little or nothing to do with games, I’m certain almost all of them will have to do with some form of entertainment. That is the world I enjoy to surround myself with and I also believe that learnings from other styles and mediums can translate into interactive games.
I do hope that you enjoy, at least in part, my musings on the various topics that appear here. My hope is that some visitors will be inspired by the content, and others simply entertained.
